Microporous Facility

Microporous LLC, a leading manufacturer of battery separators, has committed to invest $1.35 billion to establish a new manufacturing facility in Pittsylvania County, marking a new chapter in Virginia’s manufacturing story. The company will occupy two phases of the project at the Southern Virginia Megasite, with each phase covering approximately 500,000 square feet. Microporous also controls a second lot at the site which is available for additional future expansions. This initiative will create an estimated 2,000 new jobs and further position Virginia as a leader in the nation’s manufacturing resurgence. The new facility will drive growth in the region's advanced manufacturing sector and strengthen Virginia’s presence in the rapidly evolving battery technology industry.

Microporous, a 90-year old company headquartered in Piney Flats, Tennessee, specializes in manufacturing, developing and marketing battery separators and engineered materials. The new facility will allow the company to leverage its expertise in lead battery separators into lithium-ion battery separators for applications in electric vehicles, energy storage systems, industrial and consumer electronics. The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked alongside local and regional partners to secure the project for the state. Microporous will be eligible to receive up to $60.6 million in special appropriations and other state grants. The company’s job creation efforts will be supported by the Virginia Talent Accelerator Program, ranked the top Customized Workforce Training Program in the U.S. by Business Facilities in 2024. The project also received a $100 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to support its domestic production of battery components that are critical to U.S. manufacturing and defense industries.
